~ Welcome to
the Nutrition Page ~
My interest in wellness grew
considerably when I researched the effectiveness of
relaxation and guided imagery to affect wellness for my
doctoral dissertation. It was then I learned that
wellness has three basic components: nutrition,
exercise, and stress management. Extensive research
demonstrates that these are essential for our health.
Nutrition became more of an interest and concern as I
began to teach my wellness program to cancer patients
and their families. There was so much conflicting
information. So, here are some very brief comments and
suggestions. However, what you’re about to read can
appear overwhelming. Please take baby steps, or do
whatever you can to get started. As you make changes, it
becomes easier and easier. Honest.

- Eat more fresh/raw fruits and
vegetables (7-13 servings daily, preferably
organic).
- Eat whole grains.
- Buy local-grown vs.
supermarket.
- Avoid processed foods,
preservatives, & almost anything that’s packaged.
- Avoid junk food – It’s not
food; it’s junk (burgers, fries, doughnuts, etc.).
- Avoid all sugars and sugar
substitutes, especially soda drinks and high
fructose corn syrup.
- Drink more water (half you
body weight in ounces daily).
- Avoid caffeine.
- Avoid wheat (gluten) and
dairy.
- Avoid saturated fats - read
meats and any heated fats (trans fats).
I am very aware of the difficulty
that people can have making any change in their
lifestyle. The fact is we have learned very unhealthy
habits related to our health and wellness. I am certain
that the above changes are in your interest. Please take
care of yourself.
Metabolism
Our body cells need and burn energy as a normal part of
metabolism. This process creates free radicals and
oxidative stress that must be balanced by consumption of
whole foods and antioxidants. Unfortunately, eating
sugar and fried and processed food increases free
radical production. If this oxidative stress is not
controlled, inflammation, aging, and disease result.
The good news is that oxidative damage can be minimized
through a whole-food diet rich in antioxidants, and by
whole-food supplementation. Good nutrition can also
improve, if not cure, poor cholesterol regulation. If
you are not eating a healthy diet, exercising or
managing your stress well, the whole-food product that I
take and recommend is
Juice Plus. It is 15 fruits and
vegetables, 2 whole grains, and 9 grapes and berries in
3 capsules (or chewable form). It is the ideal way for
most people to fill in the gap between what we’re eating
and what we should be eating. And it has been
demonstrated to significantly offset the damage of a
poor diet, as well. It is inexpensive, convenient, and
the best researched nutraceutical available.
