When people relect back on their lives, they consistently say that they would play more and
work less. It's not too late. - Dean Shrock, Ph.D.

"Go Fishing!" Dr. Dean Shrock, a psychologist, taught this message to thousands of cancer patients and their families for almost 20 years. The familiar phrase is his way of stressing the importance of having a will to live, which Shrock believes can make a difference in people's health.

Shrock's program was evaluated in a comparison of 50 early stage breast and prostate cancer patients (who attended his six, two-hour classes) and 139 matched-control patients. At follow up, none of the breast cancer patients in Shrock's group died, whereas 12% of the control group died. Twice as many matched-control prostate cancer patients died compared to those who attended the classes.

A March 25, 1999 article in USA Today reported that the findings of Shrock's research confirm that stress management groups may help early stage cancer patients live longer. Currently Shrock is touring the U.S. in support of his book, Doctor's Orders: Go Fishing, which explains the program he researched and taught while Director of Mind-Body Medicine for a physician management group of 40 cancer centers.

Nearly one in two Americans will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime. This means that essentially everyone (friends and family) will be touched by cancer.

Shrock is very pleased to have this book available as a resource so that people can have another tool to help themselves when dealing with cancer. However, as Dr. Marty Rossman states in his foreword to the book, "This book isn't about cancer, but about life."

Shrock's research suggests that joy and peace of mind are essential to good health, and his book tells readers how to find both. Readers can use the information to get well or stay well. People who are busy doing what they like to do not only tend to forget their aches and pains, but experience a positive effect on their quality and length of life. Shrock believes that when people feel listened to, cared for, and supported it is as potentially healing as anything else they can do.
